Park Instructor Course
                       Description

GENERAL GOAL

To introduce the candidates to various terrain park features and manoeuvres:

  • Introduction to jumps & airs
  • Introduction to rails and boxes
  • Introduction to airs with rotation
  • Introduction to halfpipe (if available)
  • Terrain Park safety and etiquette

OBJECTIVES

The objectives for this course are:

  • Learning proven, safe, and efficient approaches to introductory terrain park riding.
  • Improving your teaching skills.
  • Improving your riding skills.
  • Developing a positive attitude towards terrain park riding and teaching, and terrain park safety.

 

CONTENT

During the course, the following subjects will be discussed:

  • Safety, etiquette in the park
  • Session planning and evaluation
  • Student development
  • Equipment review
  • Skills and Drills for terrain park introduction

METHODOLOGY

On-Snow Sessions

Technical Sessions

  • Groups will work on riding improvement, tactics and how to adapt exercises and drills to improve or explore skill development for terrain park riding.
  • Video analysis (if available).
  • Session Planning
  • Effective teaching methods will be presented and candidates will be given the opportunity to practice their teaching skills.

Off-Snow Sessions

  • Group workshops will take place before and after on-snow sessions.

EVALUATION

Course candidates will be assessed and updated daily on their performance and progress. Results will be given to each candidate at the end of the course.

Technical Evaluation

Course candidates must demonstrate basic terrain park skill and awareness in different situations:

  • Terrain: moderate (green and blue runs and introductory terrain park features)
  • Speed: low to moderate
  • Skills: fundamental riding skills (Stance & Balance, Steering, Edging, Pressure Control and Timing & Coordination will have to be adjusted according to speed and difficulty of terrain).Candidates must demonstrate a straight air with grab, a 180 in the air, and a 50-50 on a basic rail or box.
  • Demonstrations executed by the candidate during class time will be evaluated on a daily basis.

Teaching Evaluation

The teaching evaluation requires the participation of the student in all workshops and sessions. The candidate must demonstrate that he/she can fulfill the following criteria:

  • control of the class
  • safe environment
  • lesson is organized
  • good communication skills
  • understanding of the fundamentals of terrain park riding
  • adequate technical demonstrations
  • analysis, improvement, and appropriate drills

Marking System

Technical (Riding) Evaluation:

  • Pass (meets standard or above standard)
  • Fail (below standard)

Teaching Evaluation:

  • Pass (meets standard or above standard)
  • Fail (below standard)

Retest Evaluations

In a situation where the candidate fails both the riding and teaching, he/she will have to take the full course over again. In a fail situation for either riding or teaching, the course candidate will have until the end of the following season to take a retest for the portion failed. If it is riding, the candidate will attend Day 1, and if it is teaching, it will be Day 2. Candidates will be trained and evaluated during those days only. If the candidate does not take a re-test within the time limit stated above, then they will have to take the full course over again but will only be required to retest the portion(s) missed.
